Farmville, Virginia, Police Detective Sammy Entrekin ensures that no man is left behind. Entrekin advocated for a military funeral for a Vietnam vet who had committed suicide in January, and whose body was not claimed by any family. A veteran himself, Entrekin felt this was the proper thing to do.
Robert Garrad, Jr. died alone in a Farmville hotel room; he took his life. “No man left behind” has been a motto for the military for many, many years. Detective Entrekin takes that motto very seriously. Although they had never met, Entrekin felt compelled to see that Garrad received proper military honors. It was Entrekin’s sense of duty and honor that propelled him to see to it that Garrad had a proper funeral and burial. Garrad was buried in Amelia Veteran’s Cemetery in March.
In this time of uncertainty for our law-enforcement officials, it is wonderful to hear about those who go above and beyond for others. Thank you, Detective Entrekin, for your advocacy on behalf of a troubled fellow veteran so that he would be buried with dignity and honor.
