Police work has always entailed an element of risk. However, the job is becoming increasingly more dangerous because of the escalating war against police. Anti-police sentiment has gone hand-in-hand with violent rioting, looting, destruction of property, and calls for defunding, disarming, and disbanding police departments. Although there are rogue cops who should be and are brought to justice, they by no means represent the vast majority of police officers, who serve honorably.

To show the human side of police officers that you don’t always see in the news, we have taken some tidbits from police departments across the country showing how they are connecting with their community via social media.

Showing Support for Causes

The Grand Chute, Wisconsin, Police Department showed their support for Breast Cancer Awareness Month by allowing officers to wear a pink version of the department patch on their uniform. The patch was also displayed on many of the department vehicles. The Madison Police Department also had the same idea in mind!

Involving the Community

Individuals in communities like to be heard so that they know they have a voice. The West Des Moines, Iowa, Police Department got their community involved in a debate on the colors and graphics on their patrol vehicles.

Interacting With Your Community

A police officer’s duty is to serve and protect the individuals in their community. Many departments also enjoy getting out in the community to build relationships with their citizens and help out in causes that the community is passionate about. The Miami, Florida, Police Department participated in a Community Drive-Through Food Distribution to help bring awareness to domestic violence.

Have Fun!

Being an officer is a tough and serious job. Every day they go into work not knowing what the day is going to bring. So it’s important to have a little fun!

Creative Activities

It’s also important for officers to not only interact with their community but finding fun and creative ways to do so. The Miami, Florida, Police Department also hosted “National Night Out” where they virtually put on many activities for their members in the community.

With this current war on our local police, it is important that we continue to recognize the positive that comes from our local police. As you can see, there are many ways that local police departments around the country are staying connected with their community in a positive way with the use of social media. In the age in which we live, it is pretty much required to put today’s technology to use. All you need is a little bit of creativity and humor! Stay safe, and God bless.
