The lead article in this edition of the Intelligence Brief is authored by Deputy Chief Joseph Loughlin, Ret., from the Portland, Maine Police Department. Chief Loughlin has written about a subject that few, if any, have ever read regarding law enforcement, Our Police Humanity: Shots Fired and the Myths About Police Shootings. The impact on police officers who have used their firearms in the performance of their duties is not usually discussed outside of internal police investigations. Chief Loughlin shows the incredible effect faced by police, many of whom have difficulty coming to grips with the aftermath of a shooting incident. A number of officers are unable to return to normal police work after a violent shoot-out; others are so traumatized they terminate their careers in law enforcement. All of these types of events are captured in the excellent book written by Chief Loughlin, Shots Fired, available from the Law Enforcement Charitable Foundation for $25.

Much has been said and written regarding the football players protesting the national anthem. Their behavior has angered veterans and fans alike, many of whom no longer attend or watch football games. The protests, started by Colin Kaepernick, were not directed against veterans or the flag, but against police officers. In this brief, Alex Newman exposes the real source of anger behind Kaepernick’s demonstrations and the forces that he supports. Many who sympathize with this behavior have no idea how radical this man is and are deceived by the press as to his true feelings about police and country.

Finally, a short article by Robin Kinderman shows the kind and selfless acts by police officers all over the country as they help young and old alike without regard for thanks or appreciation. These efforts take place every day throughout America, yet we rarely hear about them. More articles like the ones found in this brief can be found at LECF-inc.org and on our Facebook page.
