On this day 16 years ago...
23 New York City police officers, 37 Port Authority officers, and 343 New York City firefighters perished in their heroic attempts to save the victims of the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center, Pentagon and Flight 93.
Dozens more have lost their lives since due to illnesses contracted while working in the hazardous crash sites. A full list of the lost rescue workers can be seen at the Officer Down Memorial Page.
Law enforcement officers and rescue workers put their lives on the line for us every day; no one could imagine the magnitude of the nightmare they faced on September 11, 2001. Our hearts and prayers go out to those who unselfishly faced hell that day. Thank you for your sacrifice, and may you rest in peace.
